The Tether Pendant is one of my all time favorite designs inspired by a ring by the Crucian designer, Sonya. Back in 2021 I purchased the book God is a Woman by Lia Garvey. I was flipping through Lia’s photography and came across this picture of a hand with the coolest ring. I went to St Croix at the beginning of 2025 and was determined to find the designer of the ring. After visiting every jewelry store in Christiansted, I came across Sonya’s. They confirmed they designed the ring but archived the style. They offered to custom make it for me. It’s one of my favorite rings and inspired me to make one of my favorite necklaces.

My pendant and Sonya’s ring is based off the shackle which was used during slavery. St. Croix has such a remarkable resilient history regarding slavery. Specifically the Fireburn Labor riot in 1878 which was led by 3 black women, Mary Thomas, Axeline ""Agnes"" Salomon, and Mathilda McBean. This pendant is an homage to the trailblazing women designers such as Sonya as well as the women who led Virgin Islanders to their freedom.
